About the Event:
Based on votes from past AgTech Meetups, innov8.ag alongside Ericsson VP & Head of IoT Strategy, Rob Tiffany & Thingy, IoT CEO Scott Waller, are conducting the 3rd AgTech Meetup around IoT. With so much happening in the world of Precision Ag, there's tremendous value in having an open discussion on this topic. Whether you're an expert or new to the space, join us to share your perspective and ask the questions you've always had in regards to IoT. Learn more about each companies use cases and how they utilize IoT sensors and devices to empower growers with data.
It's no secret that growers are struggling to properly manage their resources (water usage, chemical applications, weather management) and labor forces. Unfortunately, miscommunications between farm leads are common and can cause unintentional problems like extended irrigations or chemical spray timings that overlap with irrigation. To make things worse, growers often times struggle to find an appropriate workforce to manage problems like these. Luckily, IoT experts have seen the importance and opportunity to efficiently optimize growers everyday practices.
For those of you who may not know, The Internet of things (IoT) describes the network of physical objects—"things" or objects—that are embedded with sensors, software, and other technologies for the purpose of connecting and exchanging data with other devices and systems over the Internet.
The use of IoT solutions in agriculture focus on creating an environment where mistakes like these are uncommon and less detrimental to a growers costs. This can also been known as precision ag, where growers optimize their labor forces that go into irrigation planning/scheduling, chemical usage, weather management, etc. to reduce costs and achieve higher crop yields. Some use cases of IoT in agriculture consist of soil moisture and nutrient sensors, LiDAR based imaging sensors, drone & satellite imagery, weather stations, autonomous vehicles and variable rate chemical application sprayers.
As technology and innovation collide, these use cases become commonly used to deal with everyday dilemmas. Rob Tiffany- Ericsson VP & Head of IoT Strategy
Rob Tiffany is Vice President and Head of IoT Strategy at Ericsson where he drives Internet of Things strategy and execution. He joined Ericsson in 2018 from Enterprise IoT, where was he was Founder and CEO. There he created an Edge computing system powered by Digital Twins that targeted enterprises and industrials. As CTO and Global Product Manager at Hitachi, he received the Presidential “Product of the Year” award for designing the Lumada Industrial IoT platform. This product landed in Gartner’s “Visionary Quadrant” and was a “Strong Performer” in the Forrester Wave. Spending most of his career at Microsoft, Rob was the Global Technology Lead for IoT where he incubated the Azure IoT cloud platform and co-authored its reference architecture. Prior to Microsoft, Rob was the Co-Founder of NetPerceptor where he developed one of the industry’s earliest Mobile Device Management (MDM/EMM) platforms for smartphones. A bestselling author and frequent keynote speaker, Rob serves on the boards of SmartCitiesWorld, the Washington State IoT Council & Kapios Health. He’s the Executive Director of the Moab Foundation focused on global sustainability and is routinely ranked as one of the top IoT experts and influencers in the world by Inc Magazine, Onalytica and others.
Scott Waller- Thingy, IoT CEO
Scott has over 25 years in Networking and Telecommunications; spending 10 years at Microsoft as an Architect and then 14 years at Cisco in Engineering, Sales, and Senior Leadership leading teams building solutions for Microsoft and Amazon.
In 2017, the building of a wildfire sensor for the EPA was what started Thingy IOT, now a leader in LoRaWAN networks and sensors.
